Finding a parking slot has always been a problem in space-crunched Bengaluru.

A driver has to take at least three rounds to find a place to park on major roads in the city. This is the scenario on M.G. Road, Brigade Road, Commercial Street, Residency Road among others.

Twenty-five per cent of the existing space on important roads, at least on one side, have been allotted for parking either by the authorities or public themselves.

Haphazard parking along the road side has been the practice for people after the pay-and-park scheme was abolished in 2005.

The new parking policy has been approved under the public-private-partnership module and is expected to improve traffic sense in the public.

There are plans to bring down the number of private vehicles by operating adequate public transport systems and discouraging registration of new vehicles by imposing high taxes and limited vehicular permits.

The hallmark of the policy is that it recommends the imposition of variable parking fee with higher rates during peak hours and adequate parking facilities at transport terminals.

Parking vehicles on roads in residential areas for long hours will be strictly prohibited. Parking certificates would be mandatory for heavy vehicles, and later for other vehicles.

The safety and efficiency of public road network would be considered through adoption of effective onstreet parking restrictions and management principles.

Priority will be given to movement of vehicles on arterial roads.

Short-stay parking would be in proximity to the destination. A separate short-stay parking facility may be required for business users and visitors.

It would be mandatory for public institutions to have adequate off-street parking to meet the demands of visitors. Spill over from these establishments on the streets would be strictly prohibited.

Overnight parking of buses, trucks, cars and other vehicles on roads would be discouraged.

BBMP has planned 10 automated parking complexes. Five of these would be commercial cum parking complexes.

The proposed places are —Gandhinagar, Old Central Jail, Gandhi Bazar Flower Market, S.P. Cross Road, Russell Market, Kengeri, Yelahanka (near RTO office), football stadium at Richmond Road and at Dr Ambedkar College.

The project would be executed by the Swiss challenge method.
