Hotels to pay for garbage disposal

Hotels to pay for garbage disposal
By Basavaraj Itnaal, DH News Service, Bangalore:
To cut costs while increasing service delivery, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in its new garbage contracts has authorised contractors to collect service charges from hotels, choultries and other major commercial establishments.

Though the terms of the existing contracts require the contractors to clear garbage from all commercial establishments, commercial activity has grown much faster than the projected rate.

This had prompted contractors to seek enhancement of fees. Instead of complying with their demand, the Palike has asked the contractors to collect the fees from the commercial establishments, and pay the civic body a fixed monthly franchisee fee.

Small commercial establishments need not to pay the contractors. It is only markets, commercial complexes, hotels and choultries that have to pay.

Re 1 per kilo

The fee has been fixed at Re 1 per kilo of waste. The contractors will collect, transport and pay the tipping fee to the disposal site - at no cost to Palike. Contractors may use the Ramky’s Mavallipura disposal site, Terra Firma’s Doddaballapur site or any other designated site.

No contractor who has been awarded service contracts in 2005 shall be allowed to operate in the same package he has been awarded earlier. This has been done to avoid instances of contractors collecting money both from the BBMP and commercial establishments.
