BANGALORE: The Bruhut Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) got a reprieve when the Karnataka High Court allowed its application to take up construction of a metalled road on the Madivala tank bund.

A Division Bench headed by Justice Deepak Verma passed the order on an application by the BBMP seeking permission of the court to go ahead with the road project.

In its application, the BBMP said the Bannerghatta Road had become very congested and that it could not be widened any further.

It said if the court permitted, a metalled road on the tank bund of Madivala tank, could provide an alternative to the heavy traffic on Bannerghatta Road.

It said the permission of the court is necessary as the High Court had in a public interest litigation (PIL) petition passed orders on protecting water bodies in and around Bangalore.

It clarified that it is not encroaching on the Madivala tank.
