Now, BBMP can dump its worries
DH News Service, Bangalore:
The BBMP has decided to set up two landfill units, each with a capacity to take 1,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste a day. One will be set up in Doddabidarakallu village in Chokkasandra hobli and another at Mandur in Bidarehalli hobli.
The Palike will be setting up the units on Build Operate and Transfer basis. It has invited tenders from individuals and NGOs experienced in handling municipal waste to set up the landfills. Those who are selected will be granted 25 acres of land in the above said locations to set up waste processing units at their cost, on lease for a period of 20 years. The Palike will supply 1,000 tonnes of waste every day and pay tipping fee per tonne of solid waste.
However, the private party is free to convert waste into compost, vermi-compost, bio-gas and energy and sell the end products. However, it is the duty of the private company to set up the machinery, technology needed to process the waste and get license from the local municipal body and clearance from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board.
Waste per day
At present the Palike does not have enough landfills to dispose solid waste generated in the city. According to an estimate more than 2,500 tonnes of municipal waste is generated in the city per day. Out of which 300 tonnes go to the compost unit of Karnataka Compost Development Corporation. However, major portion of the waste go to the abandoned quarries on the outskirts of the city.
An NGO Terra Firm has come forward to set up a landfill with a capacity to handle 1,000 tonnes of waste per day. The unit is expected to function from June 15. Once the unit starts functioning the Palike’s major problem will be solved. Also, once all the three landfills become operational the Palike will be at ease.
