BANGALORE: Transformer bursts, power surges or trees falling on electric cables are known to leave consumers in the dark for hours in Bangalore, a city which has already appeared on the international map for several reasons.

This is about to be a thing of the past with Bangalore Electric Supply Company (BESCOM) initiating a project 'Bangalore Distribution Upgradation Project', which is expected to be completed by 2012.

The main objective of the project is to automate the distribution network for monitoring, supervisory control and operation of the 11 kV network in Bangalore by providing suitable control and communication equipment in order to ensure uninterrupted power supply to consumers.

This would effectively bring power interruptions down to a few minutes instead of the present predicament of consumers left without electricity for hours in case of disturbances.

Which means Bangaloreans would not be left without electricity for long once the project is implemented.

Talking to this website’s newspaper , A N Ramesha, Director (Technical) of the BESCOM, said that the project would help locate faults automatically and allow healthy circuits to be energised within seconds.

While the automated system does this, the BESCOM officials and workers would simultaneously be alerted by the automation system to begin correction of the main circuit that has developed defects.

BESCOM has chalked out an estimated project cost of about Rs 568 crore. A loan agreement with Japan Bank for International Co-operation (JBIC) has already been finalised to carry out the project.
