Clean sweep for 3 slums

The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board has adopted three slums in Bangalore to conduct a cleaning drive as part of its 'World Environment Day' programme.


The board has identified slums of L R Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar and Rajendra Nagar, located in Koramangala. In association with Concern India Foundation, an NGO, and self-help groups, it will hold the drive, improve drinking water supply and drainage facility in the slums.

Board Chairman Dr Sharat Chandra told reporters the drive includes cleaning the locality and spreading awareness on cleanliness among the public.

Pampa Chowdhury, branch manager of Concern India Foundation, said the foundation has begun survey in identified slums. “We will involve self-help groups and take people of the locality into confidence before proceeding with the drive. The drive will continue for three months followed by maintenance for three months,” she said.

Sharat Chandra said the board will also hold anti-plastic, anti-litter drives. The board will involve volunteers from corporate companies and NGOs. Promotion of cloth bags in place of plastic is main component of anti-plastic drive. Anti-litter rallies will be taken out along in various parts of the City. Celebrations will culminate at Lalbagh on July 5.

'CLEAN' CONTEST
Concern India Foundation, an NGO, is holding a photography contest for schoolchildren to spread awareness on cleanliness. Schoolchildren have been asked to take pictures of people littering in public places and send them to the Foundation. Experts will select best photographs and children who took them will be awarded. The foundation will use pictures to make posters, pamphlets and hoardings to spread awareness.
