Bangalore: If roads are meant for traffic and footpaths for pedestrians, why should parking be allowed on the road?
While this is a question most urban planners ask, the fact of the matter is that parking on roads can’t be stopped unless adequate parking complexes are made available.
The solution for this has also been widely discussed — multi-level car parking units — and the concept is a great success abroad as well as in Delhi and Mumbai.
Why not Bangalore? Girish Dinesh Vyas, the MD of a Pune-based company which has made a name in making parking systems, met traffic planners and civic authority heads on Wednesday to discuss the project.
“The response was positive and the BBMP has shown interest to install automated parking systems in Bangalore,’’ Vyas said.
Earlier, addressing town planners, Vyas said a city like Bangalore has no choice but go above or below the ground to accommodate vehicles. There are 30 lakh vehicles against Bangalore’s 8-million population.
“Parking on one side of the road takes about 33% of road area which obstructs smooth flow of traffic. Multi-level car parking can do wonders for Bangalore if they are installed. Since the soil of Bangalore is strong and water table is much below the ground level, the authorities can go up to 9 metres underground and several mts above to create parking systems,’’ traffic expert M N Sreehari said.
