KSRTC to begin work on Peenya hub
By S Praveen Dhaneshkar, DH News Service, Bangalore:
Following the success of the satellite bus terminus on Mysore Road, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is all set to begin construction of an Inter Modal Transit Terminal (IMTT) at Peenya on Tumkur Road (NH 4) at a cost of Rs 71 crore.
The KSRTC has sent the proposal for the construction of IMTT under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) to the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee, Ministry of Urban Development, New Delhi, for final approval, A P Joshi, managing director KSRTC told Deccan Herald.
He said with 10 acres of defence and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) land being handed over to KSRTC, construction of the second IMTT would begin soon. “We propose to begin the construction with 35 per cent contribution from the government of India under JNNURM, 15 per cent from the government of Karnataka and rest from KSRTC funds,” he added.
Clarifications sought
The Centre has sought a few clarifications on connectivity from the terminus to the ‘Namma Metro’ station and whether a PPP model could be considered. The tender process for the construction would begin within two months.
Mr Joshi said the IMTT would conform to the NUTP (National Urban Transport Policy) guidelines on providing satellite bus terminals along grid and ring roads with seamless integration to the planned Bangalore metro station at Peenya.
With a total built up area of 27,892 sq mts, the ultra modern IMTT will have a basement and ground and first floors, with an option for five more floors. It will have a parking space for 254 cars and 817 two-wheelers, hotels, shopping and utility service centres.
“Modelled on the lines of the Mysore Road terminus, its objective is to decongest city, arterial and urban roads.”
Apart from ‘Park and Ride’ facilities, coordination with all modes of surface transportation is the aim of the project. Peenya being a industrial suburb with a density of 109 persons per hectare, the Inter Modal Transit Terminal will serve as a transport hub for northern parts of the City”, the KSRTC Managing Director Mr Joshi said. At present Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation 805 buses ply at Peenya offering 1,610 trips catering to 80,000 commuters every day.
More IMTTs
More Inter Modal Transit Terminal s are billed to come up at NGEF on Old Madras Road, Hosur Road and Kanakapura Road for which land is yet to be earmarked, explained officials.
