Kicking off Ugadi with culture treat

Bangalore: Theatre enthusiasts in the city welcomed the New Year with music, various forms of literature, authentic Kannada cuisine and theatre during Ranga Ugadi on Sunday.
The day-long programme, brought together by Ranga Shankara for the second year in a row, included cultural activities in traditional style.
The day began with the doyenne of Kannada theatre, Subhadramma Mansur, rendering theatre songs.
This was followed by Kelu Kavi, a poet’s conference, which saw the likes of Siddalingaiah, H S Venkatesha Murthy, Pushpa H L, Mukundaraj, N S Lakshminarayana Bhatt, Mohan G N, Chinnaswamy, Venkataramana Gowda, N K Hanumanthaiah, Prathibha Nandakumar, Jaraganhalli Shivashankar and Mamta Sagar participating.
Excerpts from three popular Kannada plays — Typical T P Kailasam by C R Simha’s troupe Vedike — kept the audience engaged till lunch time, which saw the guests enjoying a feast of shavige bath, bisibele bath, a variety of vegetarian dishes, buttermilk, holige, kosambri and curd rice.
Even as the Ugadi lunch was on, audience were regaled with Taalavadya and theatre songs.
This was followed by excerpts from the play Mysooru Mallige by Kalagangotri, Kelu Kathe — short-story reading session by Srinivasa Vaidya, Chetana Thirthahalli and Vasudhendra, excerpts from the play Neenaanaadre Naaneenena by Sanket.
The event saw celebrities from different fields like cinema, fine arts, music, administration and theatre, read their favourite pieces of literature.
Actors Umashri, Bhargavi Narayan, Tara, artist S G Vasudev, Deccan executive chairman captain G R Gopinath and others read out their favourites.
The celebrations came to a close with reading of excerpts from the play Sattavara Neralu.
