Chinese makeover for City station

Chinese makeover for City station
New Delhi, PTI:
India will utilise Chinese expertise to reconstruct Bangalore and Bhubaneswar railway stations to world class level.

A Chinese team, which recently visited the two stations, will soon submit a report suggesting ways to go about the proposal. Based on their suggestions, the Indian Railways would decide the future course of action.
The railways has also sought the expertise of the German Railway for developing Chandigarh and Jaipur stations.
“We have sought the expertise of the Chinese and German railways with whom we have inked MoUs to develop four stations,” Railway Board chairman K C Jena said.

The German team too had visited these stations recently, he said.

The railways has identified 24 stations in the metropolitan cities and major tourist centres across the country for development through public-private partnership.

“Besides modern infrastructure, the latest in passenger amenities, facilities of shopping and restaurants and excellent ambience would give a pleasant feeling to the public at the railway stations,” Jena said.

The Railways has also carried out a preparatory work for developing stations at New Delhi, Patna, Mumbai and Secunderabad to world class level.

According to a senior railway ministry official, there is a greater need for developing some of the major stations, most of which were built over 100 years ago and are now experiencing infrastructural inadequacies to handle the ever-increasing number of passengers. “The key objective of these projects is to provide superior services to railway passengers at these stations.
