B,K. Chandrashekar inspects work on underpass

Bangalore: Karnataka Legislative Council Chairman B.K. Chandrashekar on Tuesday said that the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike should have gathered public opinion before taking up construction of the underpass at Cauvery junction.

Talking to presspersons after inspecting the construction work, Prof. Chandrashekar said that he chose to visit the site as some people of the locality had expressed their reservations about the design of the underpass.

He said some residents pointed out to him that the design of the underpass has forced the vehicle users to take a deviation to the left at Cauvery junction (instead of moving straight as per the existing system) and this deviation, which leads to narrow stretch of residential area, will affect movement of vehicles.

Prof. Chandrashekar was also of the view that it would be difficult for the heavy vehicles to take U-turn on the surface of the underpass (as per the plan) and it might lead to traffic jam.

However, BBMP Chief Engineer (Major Roads) K.S. Krishna Reddy explained the difficulty in constructing the underpass on Bellary Road.

Mr. Reddy pointed out that presence of seven major sewer lines and a large sheetrock prevented them from constructing an underpass on Bellary Road as it would have taken more than two years for it besides requiring a huge sum.
