Bangaloreans make less moolah than others

Despite being India's Silicon Valley and having a high concentration of educated manpower, the per capita income of Bangalore City is not as impressive as that of other mega cities like Delhi and Mumbai, a survey reveals.

While the per capita income of Bangalore City stands at Rs 29,394, Delhi emerges the number one city in the country with a figure of Rs 43,155, the survey jointly conducted by the country’s premier economic think tank, the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), and Max New York Life shows.

Surprisingly, Bangalore despite having a high concentration of well-paid employees in the sunrise industries like information technology and biotechnology, lags behind smaller cities like Chandigarh, which stands third in the list with a per capita income of Rs 41,018. Greater Mumbai stands second in the list with a per capita income of Rs 40,768. Bangalore can console itself as its arch-rival Hyderabad figures below it with a per capita income of Rs 28,768, while the South’s mega city Chennai shows a higher level of per capita income at Rs 32,403.

The City is also ahead of Kolkata as the eastern mega city has a lower per capita income level of Rs 27,868, the survey reveals.

Household size
As far as average household size is concerned Bangalore has a relatively smaller size standing at 4.13, while in the case of other mega cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Greater Mumbai and Chennai the figure stands at 4.78, 4.39, 4.73 and 4.14, respectively. But in the case of Hyderabad, the average household size stands at a low of 4.

As far as the comparative study of earnings of graduate households in selected cities is concerned, the survey finds that Bangalore does not fare that well.

For instance, the average earning level of graduate households is the highest in Delhi at Rs 2,58,000 per annum as compared to Rs 1,68,000 in Bangalore.

Chandigarh’s graduate households earn on an average Rs 2,28,000 per annum.

In Hyderabad, it stands at Rs 1,65,000 per annum, virtually neck-and-neck with Bangalore. As far as mega cities are concerned the average earnings of graduate households in Greater Mumbai stands at Rs 2,11,000, while in Kolkata and Chennai it rests at 1,81,000.

Interestingly, the survey also reveals that Bangalore hosts a large number of people with higher education, the City’s share of graduate households stands at a low 31 per cent. In Delhi, the share of graduate households stands at a high of 47.8 per cent compared.

In Hyderabad, the percentage of graduate households stands at 37.4 per cent. Similarly, as far as earnings of salaried and business households in selected cities are concerned, Greater Mumbai tops the list with the highest level of earnings at Rs 2,05,000 per annum compared to Rs 1,34,000 in Bangalore. Smaller cities like Chandigarh and Lucknow fare better than BangaloreHowever, Bangalore is ahead of the other major southern cities of Hyderabad and Chennai.
