Underpass woes never-ending

Underpass woes never-ending
DH News Service, Bangalore:
Twenty days have gone by since work on the underpass at Cauvery junction was started, and the three day magic has not worked out - even nearly three weeks later.

Chandrashekhar, a cab driver, who used to commute along T Chowdaiah Road complains, “First they said three days. Later they asked for 10 more days. It has been neverending work.”

Similarly there are many other people who have serious objections to the work.

Dr Rajan, a resident of Sadashivanagar, said that the underpass would not help in making the signal-free road to the international airport. “The Palike should not have taken up this work at all. Vehicles moving towards the airport have to take a U-turn at the underpass. But there is enough space for the U-turn. Vehicles moving towards Bellary Road from Bhashyam Circle and those taking U-turn have to share the minimum space, and that will create bottle-neck for the traffic movement,” said Dr Rajan.

Rajan felt that the Palike should not have planned the construction of an underpass at Cauvery junction, concentrating instead on other junctions. “There is no rule that road approaching the international airport should be signal-free. People are ready to wait for two-three minutes at a signal. Instead of damaging the T Chowdaiah Road the Palike should have allowed it as it is,” he said.

No deadlines
Chief Engineer (Major Roads) K S Krishna Reddy said that finishing work is on. Placing crash rods along the underpass is being done. Once it is finished, asphaltation will be taken up. “I don’t want to give deadlines. But we will complete work as soon as possible,” he said.
