Ads to offset underpass cost

Ads to offset underpass cost
DH News Service, Bangalore:
Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike plans to get back a major part of the money spent on the underpass at Cauvery Junction by renting out railings alongside the underpass for advertisement hoardings.

A senior officer of the Palike said railings on either side of the underpass would be prime spots for commercial advertisements. As International Airport-bound vehicles would commute on the road, advertisements at these places would have greater impact and commercial establishments would be willing to pay a hefty price to get a place to display their hoardings.

The Palike is expecting to get back at least 75 per cent of the total expenditure through advertisements, he said.

The officer said that along with the railings, poles to be placed on either side of the underpass would be used to put up the hoardings. The Palike also plans to adopt the same mode to attract revenue at other underpasses as well.

According to a senior engineer, construction of the underpass at Cauvery junction would be completed by Wednesday. Work on laying of pipeline for the supplement drain set up in the underpass has been pending. It would be completed within a day. After that asphaltation works would take up one more day. “By Wednesday we will be able to finish the work,” he said.

Construction of the underpass began on December 16. Palike commissioner Dr S Subramanya had promised that the work would be completed in three days. However, the Palike could not fulfil its promise as a BWSSB pipeline got ruptured during excavation work. Since then the work has been delayed.

Students of M S Ramaiah Engineering College spent two days at the underpass work site explaining to the public the difficulties the Palike faced in completing the work. They told the public that although the work has not been completed as per the deadline, the work would ease traffic woes.
