Join the march for a better city

Bangalore: Can’t stop cribbing about ruthless traffic, mounting garbage or lack of infrastructure? Come Sunday, you can see for yourself how to make a difference. If you care the least for Bangalore, come out and join the historic Leadership March, says this bunch of IITians and IIMs, who have come under the banner of Leadcap.
The main theme of the walk on February 10 is ‘It’s time we stood up’. The subtheme is ‘Traffic discipline’.
Four smaller marches (about 400 people each) from Richmond Road, Residency Road, Kasturba Road and Lavelle Road will be led by a leader, to culminate at the Richmond Town cricket ground. A traffic expert will then address the gathering.
“This time, the march hopes to impress upon every Bangalorean to realize the importance of traffic discipline, though it will be a primer for a series of others that would follow,’’ said Sangeeth Varghese, founder of Leadcap. To create excitement and empowerment, placard and posters selected out of competitions held in schools like Bishop Cotton’s, Cathedral, Baldwin, Stracey’s and Good Shepherd will be displayed.
The Leadership March was an idea that took shape when Sangeeth appeared as guest editor for The Times of India on January 1, 2008. “We discussed how a citizen could make Bangalore a better city. I felt it was time to experiment with the lessons learnt at the Harvard School, the London School of Economics, IIMs or the IISc. A close look at evolution of nations, we realized leaders were rarely born and institutions that support individual leadership were missing in India. Democratisation of leadership is necessary for change to happen,’’ explained Varghese.
Hardly six months old, Leadcap hopes to reinforce the quality of leadership in individuals to fight complacency. “Together, we can change many things, but change should be inspired at an individual level. Our interventions will be at different levels, involving a crosssection of society. A series of 10 leadership marches around 10 zones will be held over 10 weeks,’’ added Varghese.
