KEEPING A CLOSE WATCH
Don’t mess with this camera, you will be red-faced
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Bangalore: The countdown on the traffic signal timer has begun and you’re revving up your engine. But be warned, the next time you decide to jump the gun and take off, there’s a roving eye watching you.
Newly installed Red Speed Cameras at five major junctions capture the registration number of vehicles jumping signals. Already, 8,000 rule-violations have been detected. The cameras have been set up as part of a pilot project at Kamraj Road-Cubbon Road junction; Hennur-Ring Road junction; Deve Gowda petrol bunk; CV Raman Road-New BEL junction; and, JP Nagar 24 Main-Ring Road junction.
The image-processing centre will receive images online and will redirect it to the respective RTOs. However, until the server is installed and starts functioning, the images have to be retrieved manually and stored on a hard disk.
Senior traffic officials said, now, it hardly takes a few minutes to retrieve data. “Setting up online transmission of the violators’ information — along with their photograph — will take a while. Shortly, the main server will be ready to receive data from the five junctions. Until then, information will be retrieved manually. However, it will be sent to respective RTOs through another server,’’ said additional commissioner of police (traffic) K C Ramamurthy said.
This apart, five of the 10 RTOs in the city are yet to be computerized. “All the RTOs in the state will be computerized soon. Five RTOs in Bangalore will connected through server in three months,’’ a police officer said.
