Cabbies go red over Infy’s tinted pane ban

BANGALORE: Confusion prevailed for some time at the Infosys campus at the Electronics City after a number of cab drivers went on a sudden strike at 12.30 in the night.

They were protesting against the software company, which insisted they remove tinted glasses and curtains from their cabs. The cabbies, who had gone to the campus to pick up professionals, went on a strike opposing the security moves from Infy.

Apparently, Infosys had asked these cab drivers to remove the tinted panes and the curtains citing security reasons. This move infuriated the cab drivers who went on strike by not dropping Infy staffers back home.

“There was a protest by call centre cab drivers. Drivers were protesting against Infosys, which asked them to stop using tinted window panes in their cabs,’’ ACP B R Prasad told this website's newspaper. The officer said drivers called off the strike after Infosys authorities intervened and decided to resolve the issue internally.

Infosys HR head Mohandas Pai, however, said there was no strike at the Infosys campus. He, however, said; “All cab drivers had gathered together and wanted to speak to someone from Infosys because we had asked for some changes.

We did not want cabs to have tinted panes and curtains for security reasons. We had asked for the enforcement of security rules.’’ “We are in discussions with the drivers over the issue. It will take some time to sort it out,’’ he added.

According to the city police directive, cab drivers are not supposed to use tinted glasses. “Many cab drivers violate these rules,’’ said R Karthik Shekhar of UNITES (Union for Information and Technology Enabled Services India).
