Plans afoot for second runway

Bangalore: Even as the international airport at Devanahalli is getting ready to become functional, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) plans to seek permission for the additional runway to handle projected traffic in the next five years.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a presentation at FKCCI on Friday, principal
secretary (infrastructure) V P Baligar said the issue has to be sorted out with the Indian Air Force as its clearance was a pre-requisite for construction of the additional runway in view of the Jalahalli and Yelahanka air strips. He said discussions would be initiated soon.
β€œIt is estimated that the passenger traffic at the international airport would be around 11 million and the available infrastructure can facilitate movement of passengers up to 20 million. Anticipating further growth and demand, it is proposed that the second runway would be laid by 2013,’’ he said. The third phase of planning will also include construction of additional taxi bays, terminals and other facilities to go with the runway, he added.
