BBMP promises us all a smooth ride by March

BBMP promises us all a smooth ride by March

Bangalore: By March 2008, your ride will be smooth on city roads, as around 600 roads will get ready by then.
The BBMP started the work two weeks ago and has completed over 100 roads. Moving away from the earlier method of awarding contracts for road works under packages, this time the BBMP has identified 19 asphalt contractors who have hot-mix plant. BBMP commissioner S Subramanya said around Rs 250 crore has been allocated for road works in new BBMP areas and around Rs 170 crore for old areas. “Each zone has over 150 roads. So in effect, close to 500 major, arterial and subarterial roads have been taken up. I am inspecting the works personally. Wherever my engineers or me find work carried out isn’t satisfactory, we have asked the contractor to re-asphalt. We did this for some roads in Sarvabhoumanagar. On some roads asphalt chips off due to water stagnation or absence of culverts like on KR Road. Here, we are going for concrete patches.’’
The commissioner said this time, strict instructions have been given to carry out works according to road engineering specifications. If not, contractors have to move out.
