BBMP draws up policy to ease parking woes

Bangalore: Within two days of holding discussions with governor Rameshwar Thakur on bad roads and traffic, the BBMP has worked out a parking policy, which will be submitted to the government for approval.
Re-introduction of the pay-andpark system, removing surface parking in central areas, constructing multi-storeyed car parking units in 40 spots and clearing basements for parking are some of the measures BBMP has thought up.
BBMP commissioner S Subramanya told the TOI the draft policy will be discussed with advisers, chief secretary and urban development department secretary, and will be presented to the governor for consent.
“The parking issue was discussed with the governor, advisers and secretaries last week during a presentation. The governor asked us to work out a comprehensive working plan to decongest city traffic and to immediately address parking issues,” he said. The BBMP has identified 40 plots to construct multistoreyed car parking units. All of them are owned by the BBMP, and tenders will be floated to build car parks with space reserved for commercial activities under public private participation. BBMP is thinking of banning parking on roads. “There is no space for vehicles to ply on roads and where is the space for parking. It’s a luxury at the cost of traffic pile-ups. We are looking at banning parking in central areas and on congested roads. The issue of metered parking on shopping streets also came up.
“We are thinking loud on this issue and we will open a public debate before taking any decision,” Subramanya added.
The BBMP has formed teams to identify parking lots every 500 metres of arterial roads. They will encourage parking on vacant plots and give exemptions under property tax to a certain extent.
