Who’s to blame for our messy roads?
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
The ongoing Bad Roads series in The Times of India has started a debate on who’s guilty and who’s not. While many citizens have been sending photographs of unmotorable roads to TOI, the BBMP has kept track of the ‘hall of shame’. Here’s the BBMP’s take on bad roads.
BBMP commissioner S Subramanya said: “People do not realise that a majority of roads showcased in the series are in the newly-added zones of Greater Bangalore. There are unauthorised layouts with little or no planning. It was shocking to find houses sinking in soakpits in the roads, leaving no scope for blacktopping them even in future. However, we are attending to potholed roads.’’
The next step would be to introduce utility ducts to curb road-digging. “Resurfacing roads is not the answer as long as we continue to have a matrix of utility lines buried in the ground and the spree of road-digging for repairs,’’ said Subramanya.
Citizens must share blame
Should infrastructure facilities be provided to citizens who flout rules and regulations? This is the question posed by senior BBMP officials. Those demanding amenities are from citizens who have built houses on drains and unapproved layouts. Many have no qualms about not paying their taxes either, charged officials.
