BANGALORE: Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has planned a New Year gift to the harried motorists of the city.

The civic body would start the construction of underpasses across three busy junctions. The projects are awaiting clearance from the State government and have been cleared by the Centre.

The underpasses would be built across CNR Rao Circle opposite IISc, Outer Ring Road (ORR)-Puttenhalli junction and ORR-Kadirenhalli junction.

Palike special commissioner K R Srinivasa told this website's newspaper that the contractors have been identified for these projects and the work would commence in the first week of January.

These junctions are in the north-eastern part of Bangalore and give connections to the highway on Bangalore-Pune, Bangalore- Chennai and Bangalore-Hyderabad corridors.

‘‘These projects would help reduce accidents, lower pollution and accelerate the overall development of the area,’’ said Srinivasa.

Puttenhalli underpass is expected to reduce congestion by 39.41 per cent, CNR Rao circle by 57.5 per cent and Kadirenhalli project by 46.89 per cent.

Projects to cost Rs 80 cr

The total cost of these projects is Rs 80.06 crore, of which the Centre has sanctioned a grant of Rs 28.02 crore. The state would chip in with Rs 28.02 crore and Rs 40.03 crore would be borne by the BBMP.

The rate of return on investment is estimated to be an average of 23 per cent - much above the accounting requirement of 15 per cent.

CNR Rao circle project would cost Rs 27.68 crore of which Rs 9.68 crore is Central grant, Rs 4.15 crore State grant and Rs 13.84 crore would be borne by the BBMP.

Puttenhalli project would cost Rs 24.78 crore, of which Rs 8.67 crore is Central grant, Rs 3.71 crore State grant and Rs 12.39 crore would be borne by the BBMP.

Kadirenahalli project would cost Rs 27.60 crore of which Rs 9.66 crore is Central grant, Rs 4.14 crore State grant and Rs 13.80 crore would be borne by BBMP.
