Stench due to delay in cleaning the tank in which thousands of Ganesha idols were immersed, has become miserable for the college students.
“It is irritating. We can’t stay here even for a minute. But no way out,” said Priya, I year BSc student in RBANMS degree college in Ulsoor.

“Neither we can concentrate on teaching nor we can do experiments in lab. How can we think of our syllabus when inhaling fresh oxygen itself has become impossible,” V Varalakshmi, I year BSc student, argues. “We can’t sit inside the classroom even for an hour.
Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagar Palike has been spending funds in crores for beautification of Ulsoor. I don’t know where the money went. But, we are the suffering lot,” Fahim Abbas, final year BSc student said.
Worst hit
Suresh, another final year BSc student said disposal of all types of garbage into drain is the main reason for bad smell. Students and faculty of RBANMS first grade and RBANMS PU College, which are close to the tank, are worst hit by obnoxious smell.
Mr Y S Chandrashekhar, senior lecturer in Physics Department, said the college staff has been suffering a lot for the last seven years because of bad smell . “During summer it is highly irritating. We can’t stay in the college premises even for a minute.
But, there is no way out. We have to conduct classes, semester examinations are fast approaching. Sometimes students fell sick. The college administration has complained the Palike. But, no steps have been taken to tackle the situation,” he said.
Seetharam sells tender-coconut near-by Ulsoor tank. He said for the last 2 days he has been inhaling bad smell. BBMP (Bharatinagar division) Executive Engineer K T Nagaraj said this time more 1.5 lakh Ganesha idols were immersed in the tank. The Palike has taken up clearance work of the tank. Water is being pumped out. Within a day or two the tank will be cleared and the people can heave a sigh of relief.
