More trees come under axe to make way for metro project
DH News Service, Bangalore:
The decks are now cleared on the promenade for the work to continue.
With nine trees successfully translocated from the M G Road boulevard to the adjacent Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Grounds and sprouting leaves, the decks are now cleared on the promenade for the work to continue.
BMRC has now begun felling trees that would not withstand translocation. C Jayaram, Conservator of Forests and Environment Officer, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation speaking to Deccan Herald on Saturday said with the tree translocation initiative complete, remaining trees coming in the way of the project, which would not withstand transplantation have been felled.
“We had sought permission from the BBMP to fell other trees, so as to facilitate speedy work on the project” he added.
More saplings
The BMRC has already started the program to plant ten saplings for every tree felled for the ‘Namma Metro’ project.
Meanwhile, Mr Goverdhan of Bangalore Environment Trust added the successful tree transplantation initiative, a first in the City was taken up to prove that green cover in Bangalore could be saved even while implementing massive infrastructure projects.
“We are extremely happy that the exercise has borne fruit. Trees being able to acclimatise to their new environs is proof enough of our effort” added Mr Goverdhan.
