In a heart-rending incident, a six-year-old boy accidentally fell off the fourth floor of Garuda Mall here on Sunday evening and succumbed to severe head injuries within hours of being admitted to hospital.
The deceased has been identified as Ahan, son of Bharat Bhandari, an industrialist and resident of Yelahanka.
A student of Class I at Vidya Shilpa school, Yelahanka, the boy was in the mall to watch a movie at the Inox mulitplex theatre along with his parents and relatives. As they had reached the venue well before time for the evening show, Ahan and some other children started playing on the fourth floor where the mulitplex is located. A product promotion campaign taking place on the ground floor drew Ahan’s attention. The boy was taking a peek at the campaign from a small passage between the parapet railings and the escalator. Eager to have a better view, he sought to hold on to the railings of the escalator which was working.
The moment Ahan held on to the railing, the escalator dragged him a bit upwards. The boy lost balance and fell down on the banners of the promotional show on the ground floor suffering severe head injuries. The incident occurred at around 3:40 pm. Blood started flowing out of Ahan’s ears and he was rushed to Hosmat Hospital. A team of five specialist doctors attended on the boy but he breathed his last at around 5:30 pm, sources explained.
Hospital sources said that there was little chance of saving Ahan as he had sustained severe internal injuries. Ahan’s midbrain, controlling the functions of organs, was completely damaged.
