BANGALORE: One can’t count the number of times accidents have taken place because of speeding vehicles overtaking another from the opposite direction. This happens on roads which have no medians. It’s difficult for commuters to enjoy a free ride due to lack of medians on most of the arterial roads.

There have been instances where people have met with accidents at intersections especially during peak hours. This also contributes to the increasing traffic snarls and slow traffic movement on prime arterial roads like Jayanagar, Vijaynagar, Rajajinagar, Magadi Main Road, Koramangala and Banaswadi Main Road. Commuters opine that the situation is worse when buses are jammed at intersections. Regulating traffic is very difficult with the absence of medians on main roads.

"It’s a common sight especially during peak hours. There are no traffic police officials to regulate the traffic. With Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) increasing its jurisdiction, responsibility of the civic agency and the traffic department also increases to ensure that there are lesser mishaps on roads. There are many instances where people have met with accidents because of lack of medians,’’ said Udit G, a commuter.

Mere widening of roads will not improve city’s infrastructure, adequate roads with medians and footpaths are necessary, ascertain commuters. ‘‘Only few roads located in the vicinity of prime commercial places have medians which are well developed. Whereas most parts of the city have been neglected by officials,’’ said Bharatlal M, a motorist.Absence of road medians responsible for accidents
