Most stations elevated in phase one of project
Most of the Metro stations along the phase one route will be elevated. Leena Mudbidri outlines the plans
The state-of-the-art Metro Rail will have around 37 stations costing an estimated Rs 11 crore each, dotting the route along Phase One of the Metro service. These glass and chrome structures will be aesthetically designed to house all the basic facilities for commuters. While most of the standard-sized stations will measure 135x25 metres, the terminals at Byappanahalli, R V Road, Mysore Road and Hesarghatta Road will be larger ones.
Station locations
The Metro Rail will pass through an amalgamation of levels. While some parts of the route will be elevated others will pass underground as well as at grade level.
Elevated stations
From Byapanahalli Terminal: The stations at Old Madras Road, CMH Road in Indiranagar, Ulsoor, Trinity Circle and the Plaza station on M G Road will be elevated.
From Hesarghatta Road Terminal: The nearest station at this point - Yeshwanthpur Station, Soap Factory, Mahalakshmi Layout, Rajajinagar, Kuvempu Road, Malleswaram and Swastik Station.
From Mysore Road Terminal: Deepanjali Nagar, Vijayanagar, Toll Gate, Hosahalli, Magadi Road
From R V Road Terminal: Jayanagar, Lalbagh, K R Road
Underground stations
With the Majestic Station being the nerve centre for the Metro Rail's Phase One, the BMRC has planned to leave the existing structures in this hub untouched. Instead, Majestic Central Station will be built underground and will be the largest among the stations to handle a capacity turnout of thousands of commuters in a single day. It promises to be a one-of-a-kind two-level station at heights of -12 and - 18 feet.
Around Majestic Central: Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium, Vidhana Soudha, Central College
Grade level
In Phase One, only the Byapanahalli Terminal on Old Madras Road will be at grade level.
Facilities at stations
Apart from being aesthetically appealing with glass facades, gardens, fountains and dedicated parking lots, each of these stations will be well appointed with features and facilities that will put them on par with international standards. Skywalks, lifts and escalators will facilitate easy movement of passengers from the feeder bus-stops to the interior of the stations.
Other basic facilities in each of the centrally air conditioned stations will include an information desk with a large map of the stations network, ATM centres, turnstile auto fare machines, fire safety equipment, newspaper, coffee, florist and fruit kiosks, first aid counter, medical store, surveillance CCTVs and digital wireless televisions.
Parking lots at stations
M G Road station: Underground segregated parking on the Plaza theatre side for 34 two-wheelers and on the promenade side for 44 cars.
Trinity Circle Station:
Surface parking on north side and south side. North side 80 two-wheelers and 40 cars, and on the South side 30 twowheelers and 17 cars.
Ulsoor Station: Surface parking area for 30 two-wheelers and 10 cars
C M H Road station:
Large parking area at the surface level to house 215 twowheelers and 60 cars.
Old Madras Road station: Surface parking facility on both northern and southern sides of the station. North side 70 two-wheelers and 20 cars. On the south side 442 two-wheelers and 137 cars
Byappanahalli: Largest parking area - 1,000 twowheelers and 920 cars.
Single ticket system
The BMTC planning committee is also contemplating the introduction of a 'single ticket system' along the lines of a season ticket, where one ticket will cater to the payment of point-to-point fare, parking fee and feeder bus service charge to save on time otherwise taken for daily payment transactions.
