More roads will lead to Bangalore North

More roads will lead to Bangalore North

The new roads and infrastructure projects on the anvil will make connectivity to this part of the city better, paving the way for more development

Over the years, Bangalore has emerged as a major technology hub, knowledge capital and R&D source of the world. Now, the infrastructure needs to keep pace with these developments and efforts are on in a big way to set right these issues. Increased connectivity is of utmost importance for a bustling city like Bangalore. Although work on the International Airport at Devanahalli is on, there is a growing concern about connectivity to the airport from all parts of the city.
Efforts are also on to set up integrated townships in the city's outskirts to decongest the central business district of Bangalore. In this scenario, areas in Bangalore, especially areas that are in Bangalore North are attracting investors. Many new road projects are on the cards too. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagar Palike (BBMP), Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) and Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority (BMRDA) have taken up several initiatives in this direction.
While some of these new road projects provide increased connectivity to the airport, yet others act as links between the Airport Expressway, Peripheral Road and the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR), making it convenient for areas in Bangalore North to be easily accessible to the rest of the city, including its outskirts.

Road projects by BDA

The Minsk Square Tunnel that's being taken up by the BDA is an 8-km tunnel that will connect Minsk Square and the Hebbal Flyover. This will further lead to the 6-lane Airport Expressway, making it a smooth ride to the airport for people staying in and around this area.
The BDA proposes to construct a Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) around Bangalore City to decongest the city traffic. This 116-km stretch connects Mysore-Hosur-Tumkur-Bellary Roads.

Salient features of PRR

Total length of PRR - 116 km with right of way of 100 metres 8-lane divided carriageway with service roads of three lanes on either side
All major junctions across National Highways and State Highways are proposed with interchanges to make it a signal-free corridor
Street lighting for both main carriageway and service roads, lane marking, signage
Arboriculture development in the buffer zones and landscaping in central median
Service and utility ducts are proposed along
both the service roads

BBMP projects

Inner Core Ring Road: Devised as a solution to traffic congestion in Bangalore city, this will ensure signal-free flow of traffic that will decongest the core CBD (Central Business District) areas to enable faster movement. This is an elevated 29.50 km long 6-lane access-controlled toll road carriageway that cuts across the heart of the city.

Bangalore Metropolitan Region (BMR) road network

New Airport Expressway: Radiating from Outer Ring Road of Bangalore city and connecting the International Airport near Devanahalli and providing onward connectivity to NH 207 and BMRSTRRs
Intermediate Ring Road: A 160-km stretch connecting industrial and residential developments around Bangalore city to each other and to the International Airport
Radial roads: A 180-km stretch radiating from Bangalore city connecting BMR-Satellite Town Ring Roads and BMR-Intermediate Ring Roads to the Peripheral and Outer Ring Roads
Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR): A 204-km stretch, connecting towns around Bangalore city to each other and to the International Airport will connect peripheral towns of Dobbspet, Ramanagaram, Kanakapura, Anekal, Attibele, Sarjapur, Hoskote, Devanahalli and Doddaballapur in the North.
Town Ring Roads: Around important towns in Bangalore Rural district like Anekal (24 km), Kanakapura (25 km), Ramanagara (24 km), Magadi (15 km), Nelamangala (32 km), Doddaballapura (23 km), Devanahalli (24 km) and Hosakote (28 km).
