Lakes to be rid of plastic waste
VIJAY TIMES NEWS BANGALORE : In a bid to build the tempo on environmental consciousness in the run up to World Environment Day (June 5) Sunday saw nealry 200 school-going children get together and seek to make one of the citys lakes plastic-free. Benniganahalli Lake along Outer Ring Road was their pick.

The programme titled Save Lake was organised by the Bangalore Development Authority whose flyover built across the Benniganahalli Lake is known for the picturesque drive it offers.

College students, techies from nearby companies located off the lake and residents of the nearby Pai Layout too joined the youngsters to clean the lake environs.

BDA commissioner M K Shankarlinge Gowda said such drives would be taken up by the authority on a regular basis. Railings will be installed and the lake wil be fenced after desilting is through, he said.

Though the lake had been restored by the BDA, lack of maintenance had seen hyacinth growth and silt accumulation, he observed.

Apart from the Benniganahalli lake, the BDA is also in-charge of the restoration and maintenance of Rachenahalli and Jakkur lakes, the Commissioner said.
