Road widening project
Road widening project
DH News Service, Bangalore:
With the green cover over the Garden City depleting due to rapid urbanisation, the latest road-widening project undertaken by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike on four major City roads hasn’t gone down too well with the public.
In fact, the works now being taken up on the Race Course Road, Seshadri Road, Palace Road and Kasturba Road have the public virtually fretting over the government’s total unconcern about the issue of environmental degradation, among other things.
City residents who spoke to Deccan Herald on the road widening, were overwhelmingly against “any development work that is undertaken at the cost of the environment”.
“If the government is concerned over Bangalore’ development, then it should plan for satellite townships. Chopping trees in the name of development is not sustainable development.”
Satish, businessman
”Felliing of trees should be the last thing those involved in developmental activities should do. Trees are the most essential source of fresh air, rains, etc. By chopping down trees we are doing no good to ourselves or our future generations.
Ravishankar, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.
“The civic authorities’ decision to widen roads to ease traffic congestion is like loosening the pants when the stomach grows big, which will only encourage the stomach to grow bigger and bigger. Instead of widening roads, we should aim at bringing down the usage of vehicles”.
C R Rao, Professor, BVB
“The trees which are being felled should be relocated or for every tree chopped tree a sapling should be planted elsewhere.”
Harish, government employee.
”Depletion of green cover is the main cause of global warming. This year the temperature is much higher compared with last year, which is mainly because of the increase in pollution and chopping down of trees”.
Rithika, student,
BVB
