“Harvest rainwater along the storm water drain valley,” was one of the suggestions former consultant of Bangalore Mahanagara Palike G Ashwathnarayana had for BBMP to tackle flooding in Bangalore.
Delivering a talk on storm water drainage system at the Institute of Engineers here, Mr Ashwathnarayana said the Palike should take up measures to have re-charge wells along the drain valley. Such wells help in minimising flooding as well as help in recharging borewells in the near-by areas. “As the Palike has made rain water harvesting system compulsory for new buildings it should set an example for the public by setting up re-charging wells along the storm water drains. Similarly it should make efforts to retain tank areas, which help in storing rain water in larger quantity,” he said.
Listing reasons for flooding in the city, Mr Ashwathnarayan said encroachments along the drain valleys, laying BWSSB lines in the drains, dumping garbage have been contributing to the problem. Areas located near Koramangala valley are worst hit as the slope provided to it is lesser compared to other valleys.
“The Palike should improve surface and provide sufficient slope so that rain water flow faster without giving any chance for flooding”, he said. Displaying pictures of valleys filled with garbage, he suggested the Palike penalise those who dump garbage and construction debri in the valley. He also suggested removal of manholes and separation of sewerage lines from the valleys.
