BBMP to have 145 wards

BANGALORE: It is official. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will have 145 wards with a population of 45,000 in each ward. The State Government issued a notification in this regard on Thursday.

Governor T.N. Chaturvedi had returned the Ordinance on amending the Karnataka Municipal Corporations (KMC) Act seeking an increase in the number of wards from 100 to 150 in the city in November. He had asked the Government to discuss the subject thoroughly in the Legislative Assembly and then seek his approval. On January 16, the State Government notified the formation of BBMP by merging the seven City Municipal Councils, one Town Municipal Council and 111 villages increasing the city's area from 226 sq km to 741 sq km.

As the Karnataka Municipal Corporations (KMC) Act does not provide for more than 100 wards, it had to be amended. The Government had entrusted a private firm the responsibility of reorganising the wards and the notification is based on its report.
