Kanteerava stadium lacks basic amenities

Kanteerava stadium lacks basic amenities
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Bangalore: Over 350 athletes sweat it out at the Sree Kanteerava outdoor stadium every day. Yet, the Department of Youth Services and Sports does not think it is necessary to provide basic amenities to them. This, despite frequent appeals from the sporting community.
TOI did a reality check on the facilities provided at the stadium.
Drinking water: The water tank, with silt and footwear in it, reflects the department’s lack of concern towards athletes.
“Sometime ago there was water in the tank. But none of us ever dared to drink because dead cockroaches were among the many other things that came out with the water from the tank. We all carry water from home,” said an athlete who has been practising at the stadium for the past five years.
Rest rooms: It seems like ages since the toilets at the stadium have been cleaned. The stench is unbearable. Most of the athletes say they do not use them for the fear of being infected.
Multi-gym: A few years ago, the government put the tax payers money to good use by procuring a multi-gym for the stadium. The good deed ended there. The equipment, kept in the corridor, has weathered rain and sunshine. Consequently, it has rusted.
But the DYSS officials beg to differ. An official had this to say: “The multi-gym is kept outside so that it is bright and airy. As for water who says there’s no water in the tank?”
Well, the photographs tell a different story.
