Dog menace in Blore: Panel submits report

Expert committee headed by Dr Sudarshan, principal of KIMS, set up to suggest reforms for tackling dog menace submitted its report to Bangalore Bruhat Mahanagar Palike (BBMP) Commissioner K Jairaj on Wednesday.
The committee headed by Dr Sudarshan, who is also president of Rabies in Asia Foundation, was constituted by the Palike after a child was mauled by a group street dogs in Chandra Layout in January 2007. The committee comprising five experts from the fields of animal husbandry and medicine was asked to submit its report by March 31. However it was extended later. Commissioner K Jairaj said that a meeting of officers and the committee will be held on May 15, to discuss recommendations made in the report and prepare action plan to implement the same.
According to sources, the committee has recommended the Palike make obtaining licence for pet dogs compulsory and take up effective implementation of animal birth control. The committee is said to have suggested the Palike to create street dogs free zones where the problem is serious.
