Its 8:15 am on a Monday morning and chaos reigns supreme on the short stretch between the landing of Lingarajapuram flyover on Hennur Main Road to St Charles High School gate. Its a bottleneck for the traffic every time a BMTC bus halts at the bus stop, which is located too close to the landing. Also, every now and then the gatekeepers of St Charles High School stop the peak hour traffic, to help students walk the zebra crossing to safety.
A cacophony of impatient honking greets every BMTC bus that screeches to a halt at the landing, forcing commuters to apply brakes as well. Just when the traffic seems to inch again the gatekeepers in front of the school gate halt traffic around 20 times during peak hours in the morning to enable students to cross the road safely. Many parents and auto drivers invariably get an earful for stopping in front of the school to drop their children again disrupting the traffic.
A large number of commuters- parents, auto drivers, school vans who are in a hurry to get children dropped to the many schools in the cantonment area bear the brunt of the many traffic jams, as well as those rushing to get to work on time.
Lingarajapuram Flyover has been constructed on Hennur Main Road, Kariyanapalya, which connects the Cantonment area, East Railway station, Frazer Town, Cox Town and surrounding areas to Lingarajapuram, Kalyan Nagar and the surrounding areas, Hennur and the outer ring road. Close to the outer ring road, the proposed expressway to International Airport takes off.
This flyover comes under Yelahanka, Jaymahal and Bharatinagar constituency. The MLA of Jaymahal constituency, Mr Roshan Baig said “The flyover itself is defective. I have brought it to the notice of BMP officials and the government long ago. If the traffic police, BDA and BMP officials sit together, I’m sure they can come up with a solution for this traffic congestion.” The children and pedestrians can cross the road under the flyover. There is no need to halt the traffic. However, the bus stop could be shifted, suggested the Technical Consultant to BMP Commissioner, Jai Prasad.
