Eight activists of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike were arrested after they allegedly threw stones on a BMTC bus at Yelahanka Circle on Doddaballapura Road on Thursday.

Police caned the activists when they tried to block traffic, said DCP (North zone) Malini Krishnamurthy.

Autos seized

Earlier in the day, Yelahanka police had seized 10 autorickshaws for parking near a bus stop and detained four auto drivers, according to the police.

At around 2 pm, a group of 30-40 Vedike members and members of Autodrivers Union gathered at Yelahanka Circle demanding the release of the arrested and seized vehicles. They staged a dharna and an altercation ensued.

Parking for long

Vedike President Narayangowda said autos have been parking in that area for several years. This morning, the police suddenly asked the autodrivers to shift to another place. “The auto drivers protested following which four drivers were detained and beaten up.” the president charged.

The arrested were released on bail on Thursday night.
