Fresh Fruits, the fruit stall, has been there at the particular spot in front of the Nilgiris Departmental Store on Brigade Road for that many years. The BMP woke up , found it encroaching the footpath and fined Rs 1 lakh on the spot on Wednesday.

The action was taken during an inspection by BMP Commissioner K Jairaj in the evening and as far as the affected sections are concerned, the inspection was simply symbolic of the BMP’s ways. When contacted by Deccan Herald a few hours after the inspection, Azam of ‘Fresh Fruits’ sounded quite bemused.

Noting the number of years they have been in business in the area, he stressed that their shop was no obstruction to pedestrian movement. He also noted that inspections of the like by the BMP were a rarity for them. They (the BMP personnel) come every five years or so and then let matters lie.

American Corner, a small eatery restaurant next to the Rex Theatre was also pulled up and ordered closed by the Commissioner for non-production of license documents and not maintaining hygiene.

The inspection was obviously not to the liking of the traders segment on Brigade Road. There were many other violations here, but only some were looked into, they said. There were businesses being run from basements meant for parking too. They should have been checked, they said.

Elsewhere, the BMP officials ordered closure of a Chinese Hotel, “Chungalan”, on Residency Road for not maintaining hygiene.
