After getting the tag of ‘eco-friendly public transport with the use of biodiesel for its buses, Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is now planning to increase its ridership from the present 32 lakh to 50 lakh per day.
For this, the BMTC has decided to launch a promotional drive on AIR, television and print media by utilising the services of renowned Kannada cine actors and actresses and pretty models.
Through this, BMTC wants to lure rich and upper middle class to make use of its services along with the middle and lower middle class who are now its patrons.
Upendra Tripathi, managing director of BMTC, told Vijay Times that this promotional activity is slated to start from January 7, 2007.
“In order to clear the peak hour rush, BMTC is already operating 300 to 400 Peak Hour Service (PHS) buses. In addition to this, we are planning to make use of KSRTCs Rajhamsa buses during peak hours,” Tripathi said.
Due to the luxury of these buses people may like to travel in them. Most of the Rajhamsa buses are remaining idle during mornings and evenings. So, they can be utilised by the BMTC during peak hours, Tripathy added.
“BMTC is thinking to fix anything between Rs 30 and Rs 40 as fare for this service and revenue generated from this can be shared between KSRTC and BMTC,” he said.
Ice-cream: Tripathi said that shortly icecream vending on 50-odd BMTC Volvo buses will be introduced during non-peak hours.
“In order to encourage more and more people to utilise BMTC services during non-peak hours, BMTC has taken this decision. Handicapped persons will be allowed to sell the ice-creams inside the bus during these hours,” he said.
He also said that BMTC will be fixing charity boxes in its buses and money collected through these boxes will be distributed to HIV/AIDS patients and also to orphanages.

Whatever BMTC does, it cannot replace private transport because of the convenience and door to door service. Second thing is BMTC buses timings are unreliable. WAIT WAIT & WAIT, finally you end up in frustation. Suddenly trips will be cancelled.
Regarding Rajahamsas, these Rajahamsas are larger buses and slower compared to normal city buses will start clogging the city. Further there are two doors in Rajahamsas, one to enter bus and one for driver cabin which will further create problems. Further, prices are too expensive. Already BMTC buses are the most expensive in the country. Rajahamsa will be even more expensive. Nowadays these buses have become totally unattractive. You can see Rajahamsa buses waiting for passengers hours together b/n Bangalore and Mysore. People want speed and good service for city transport not the comfort.
