Thick fog delayed as many as 20 outbound flights at the HAL Airport Friday morning. Airport sources said air traffic resumed only after the fog cleared at around 7:30 am.

Met Director Dr A L Koppar said foggy conditions at the airport would prevail till mid-January, hampering flight operations. He, however, felt the conditions near the airport did not entirely reflect the overall climate in Bangalore.

No cold wave

“There’s no cold wave. It’s more of a local problem, created around the lake near the airport. Thanks to strong radiation during the day, there’s a lot of moisture condensation happening around the lake from 2 am to 5 am. This results in localised fog,” he said. Flights operated by most airlines were delayed by almost two hours because of adverse weather on Friday morning.

Outbound flights

“More than four of our outbound flights, including one to Chennai, were delayed by more than an hour,” said an Air Deccan official. Indian flights too were delayed. While the flight to Hyderabad was delayed by 75 minutes, that to Delhi was held up by 55 minutes. The Kolkata flight was delayed by 45 minutes. “One of our inbound flights from Chennai was also delayed by 75 minutes,” said an Indian spokesperson.
