A Special Task Force constituted on November 8 by M A Sadiq, Deputy Commissioner, Bangalore Urban, targeted Tavarekere hobli on Wednesday, where power houses of four crushing units were demolished and 15 trucks carrying quarried stones were seized.

The main objective of the Task Force is to check the increasing illegal mining activities and unauthorised sand filter units that have mushroomed all around Bangalore Urban district (South).

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Assistant Commissioner Nagaraj said that similar raids would continue in the near future. They have been furnished with a list of 68 illegal quarries and 73 unauthorised sand filtering units.

He said at present 18 illegal quarries were being targeted. “Like the four crushing units, we will cut off the power supply in all the other quarries as well,” he added.

The multi-department raid comprising officials from Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), Bescom, Forest Department, Mines and Geology, Revenue Department and police began the crackdown at 10.30 am on Wednesday in Cholanayakanahalli (Survey no 73) and Gangapanahalli (Survey no 13), which continued till late afternoon.

Mr Sadiq said that the materials, mainly from the quarries, were being transported from the two villages towards the City limits. “We will be putting these for public auction very soon,” he added.
