In a Delhi-like exercise, the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has got down to sealing buildings violating zonal regulations. As many as 14 buildings were sealed in Sadashivnagar (Ward 99) on Wednesday, BMP’s engineering officials said.

Wednesday’s exercise is a follow up to the one initiated on Friday last, when 12 buildings were sealed in the same area. Officials noted that BMP had on its own undertaken a survey of building use violations in Sadashivnagar area after a group of its residents approached the Court, earlier this year.

It is said that as many as 95 buildings that were meant to be residential structures were found being partly or wholly used for commercial activities: as office spaces for IT, courier, travel and advertising companies and as provision stores etc.

According to one officer, notices were being issued, since mid-August, to the owners of these structures violating the rule. A handful of them have since taken remedial measures, and 40 of them have procured stay orders from the court, he said.

Offices of a courier company, a publishing group and a consultant group are understood to have been among the units that were sealed on Wednesday. “Right now we are locking up the violating portions of the structures (in question)”, said one area engineer. The sealing drive is likely to continue over the next few days. As many as 30 personnel from the Bangalore Metropolitan Task Force and BMP’s engineering division were involved in the drive on Wednesday.
