A butterfly park was set up at the Banneragatta Biological Park (BBP), on the City outskirts, and has so far seen more than 16 generations of butterflies. The project took shape in 2004, with the construction of a dome-shaped structure - 113-feet wide and 55-feet tall. But the park has not been inaugurated and is out of bounds for the public.
It was planned to invite President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam to inaugurate the park in November 2005. However, the poor condition of Banneraghatta Road and construction of a flyover delayed the inauguration.
“The butterfly park is a good idea. Countries like Malaysia and Singapore have set up excellent butterfly parks by creating an eco-system artificially. Similar systems are needed in the butterfly park in Banneragatta.
Once the park is thrown open to the public, it will boost eco-tourism and nature education. Today nature education is confined only to a study of animals, birds and plants. Butterflies are a magnificent part of nature and a study of their life cycle will improve our understanding of nature.
Butterflies are known by their specific habitats. The host plants indicate the particular species of butterflies that thrive on them.
