Believe it or not, the Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority (BMRDA) says it will have a network of roads to provide motorists the thrill of driving at 160 km per hour and which would connect the five satellite towns being developed around the City.

The massive project, to be completed within four years, will develop ring roads, intermediate ring roads (IRR) and radial roads to connect Bidadi and Kasaba in Ramanagaram taluk, Sathanur in Kanakapura taluk, Nandagudi in Hoskote taluk, and Solur in Magadi taluk.

The BMRDA commissioner Sudhir Krishna told that the project involves developing two ring roads, IRRs and radial roads, in all covering a distance of 760 kms.

The length of 262 km of radial roads linking the two ring roads would be developed at a cost of Rs 780 crore. However, the costs for the IRR and outer ring roads had not yet been estimated pending land acquisition details.

Survey work on Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) has been completed while the survey on IRR is being carried out at various places. These roads would be connected with the help of radial roads.

Emphasis would be laid on widening the existing roads rather than constructing new roads.

Existing state highways would be widened on eightlane models while the IRR would be widened on six- lane models.

Apart from widening works like geometric improvement, straightening of roads, forming bypasses would be accommodated as part of the project.

“The roads would be designed for driving at speeds of 160 km/hr. The completed survey reports on ring roads have been sent to National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) which would confirm the extent of land to be developed, and the remaining would be done by the Public Works Department,” explained Krishna.

This network of roads would also help reduce traffic snarls in district centres.

The land acquisition would begin shortly as per the guidelines put forth by the deputy commissioner and officials of revenue department, he added.

“If all goes well road work would be completed in a span of four years,” he said.

Grade separators and interchanges will be constructed at the junction of the ring roads with national highways, State highways and major district roads.

All the roads will have provisions for carrying OFC cables, sanitary lines, telephone cables and electricity cables, he said.
