The State’s first hi-tech slaughter house may take some more time, thanks to the difference of opinion between the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike and the Chandapura Gram Panchayat, on the outskirts of Bangalore.

The State government had proposed to shift the slaughter houses located at Tannery Road, Yeshwanthpur and K R Market in Bangalore to Igaluru in Anekal taluk. However, the residents, Chandrapura Gram Panchayat, merchants and even consumers are opposed to the move.

Localites oppose the shift on the ground that it would affect the residents of the Suryanagar Layout (KHB), which will come up in the place adjacent to the proposed site for the slaughter house. On the other hand, merchants oppose the move stating that shifting of the slaughter house to a place 40 km from the City would affect their business.

“If the shift is made, the sellers need to spend almost six hours to bring meat from the hi-tech slaughter house to the City. If we decide not to do it, consumers have to travel 40 km to buy meat. In addition, the move would result in a steep hike in meat prices. Instead of shifting to a new place why can’t they modernise the existing ones?” asks R C Khureshi, President of the Meat Sellers Association.

Environment and Forest Minister C Chennigappa, speaking to Deccan Herald, told that in view of the opposition from the public and the merchants, the State government has decided to reconsider its decision to shift slaughter house to Anekal.

Why shift?

The State government, in association with the Centre, prepared a plan worth Rs 4.65 crore for modernisation of the Tannery Road slaughter house in 2002.

The tender processes were also completed. But the modernisation did not progress as a few localites moved the Court seeking shift of the slaughter house.

The Karnataka High Court then gave a judgement, in August 2002, ordering the shift of the slaughter houses from the BMP limits before June 2004.

As the deadline was not met by the BMP, the localites filed a contempt case.

Later the BMP issued notices to the slaughter houses to close down on March 11, 2005.

However, the matter is still in the Court and expected to come up for hearing on September 12. After these developments, the BMP has decided to construct a hi-tech slaughter house in an area spread over 40.28 acres near Anekal.
