Garbage disposal affected in city

Garbage disposal affected in city

The Hindu

BANGALORE: Although the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) has worked out a temporary solution to the garbage disposal problem that arose in the western parts of the city, Saturday's waste has piled up in most of the areas.

It could not be cleared because the west zone lorries, which have been temporarily diverted towards Krishnarajapuram for dumping, returned only late in the afternoon on Sunday.

Disposal of garbage was affected after officials from the Forest Department fenced a piece of land in Peenya, which was used to dump garbage collected from the west zone.

According to the private garbage contractors, garbage could not be cleared on Sunday from most of the areas in the west zone except the Sri Krishna Rajendra (SKR) market, parts of Chamarajpet and Rajajinagar.

`Helpless'

"As the lorries used to lift waste from these areas returned a little early, we have managed to get it (garbage) cleared here. We are helpless because it will take one or two days for the entire process to become normal," one of the contractors said.

As a result, residents of several areas, including Yeshwanthpur, Mahalakshmi Layout, Nandini Layout, Shivanagar and Malleswaram, had to bear with heaps of garbage strewn all over the roads.

On Saturday, the BMP identified an alternative land in Krishnarajapuram and asked all west zone lorry drivers to dump garbage there till the scientific landfill in Mavallipura was got ready.

With the BMP still awaiting an approval from the State Government for its new garbage tenders, some contractors are planning to refuse to take up work if the city corporation does not allot proper dumping yards for them.

"Most of us have decided to accept work only if dumping yards are made available. Otherwise, disposing of waste will become a problem for us," another contractor said.
