Defence land for metro work

BANGALORE: Minister of State for Defence M.M. Pallam Raju on Wednesday issued "necessary direction" to the Army officials here to make Defence land of eight acres on Old Madras Road available on a temporary basis for casting yard for the proposed metro rail project.

He conceded the demand made by Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) to transfer Defence lands that came in the way of widening 10 roads in the city.

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Managing Director V. Madhu said the land on Old Madras Road would be used to set up a casting yard for the proposed metro rail.

The Minister was receptive to the suggestion that the BMRC should be allowed to enter the 101.7 acres of Defence land in the case of which the Ministry has given its in-principal approval to transfer lands on a permanent basis to BMRC. The transfer is being allowed in exchange for 57 acres of lands that were in the possession of BMRC.

K. Jairaj, BMP Commissioner, said the modalities of transfer would be worked out later.
