BANGALORE: Mayor Mumtaz Begum has promised that the BMP will deliver on all promised tasks and provide excellent infrastructure in Bangalore City.

Speaking at the Engineer’s Day celebrations on Friday, she said with the formation of Greater Bangalore, the BMP will be faced with newer challenges, but was confident that it would be faced successfully.

Traffic woes took top honours once again as the most pressing problem facing the city. The Mayor asked for people’s cooperation in dealing with traffic and infrastructure problems.

Speaking to this newspaper later, the Mayor said that road encroachments by public, creating bottlenecks and driving on footpaths had to stop.

She also said that awareness among people had to increase regarding their responsibilities in maintaining the city. She said “people are educated and well to do, but lack civic sense.”

She cited poor coordination between various government agencies like BWSSB, BESCOM and P&T for the poor state of roads.

She commented that most of these agencies just dug up the road and carried on repair works or worse left them incomplete without clearing out the debris.

These works, she claimed were carried out without obtaining any permission from the BMP.

She pointed out that BMP was always blamed for all the problems and all the good work BMP has been doing for the past five years was conveniently ignored.
