BMP moots market reforms

You will no longer need to avoid shopping in the ‘filthy’ old market areas.

If everything goes as per plan, the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) will give an image make-over to all the markets. A meeting of Traders’ Federations of SKR Market and Kalasipalya Wholesale Yard with the Mayor, BMP commissioner and BMP officials, on Wednesday, evolved the first set of ‘market reforms’. While, the BMP officials sought co-operation from traders for effective garbage disposal, the traders bargained for better amenities.

Says a senior BMP official, “The short-term plans include instilling discipline to make the markets a hygienic place. We are spending at least Rs 1.3 crore and are banking on JN-NURM for implementing the long-term plans - better roads and sub-ways.”

A comprehensive development plan for remodelling the Kalasipalya market is on cards. The traders have agreed to vacate the premises during the renovation of the market, said an official.

MARKET REFORMS

*Gates to be installed at markets to regulate crowd, for better security.

*Identity cards for every street vendor.

*Markets to remain open between 5 am and 10 pm.

*Markets to remain closed between 1.30 pm to 3 pm (to facilitate cleaning).

*Night cleaning of the market area (till 11 pm)

*Benches, parks, elevators and automated parking.

*Lighting, drinking water and toilets on priority.

*Streamlining of hawkers.
