Resistance grows

MALLESWARAM UNDERPASS
Resistance grows
Deccan Herald

Resistance to the proposed Malleswaram Underpass has become loud and clear. On Saturday, residents under the banner of Malleswaram Nagarika Hitarakshana Vedike, distributed handouts on the many ‘oversights’ in the project. The residents are even using ‘star power’ to make their point. Actress Sudharani was roped in for the campaign.

Meanwhile, the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) seems to be busy examining the set of objections given to them by district incharge minister R Ashok last week. And now, a second set of objections have been raised. The Vedike has called attention to the various ‘defects’ in the basic structure of the underpass and also the routing problems. The main objections are -the bus stops on 5th main road and 6th main road have been overlooked at the time of drawing the plan; The exisiting bus stop on Margosa Road (9th main) is shown as an alternative to 5th main bus stop; Traffic movement from Geetanjali theatre road to Malleswaram circle not studied; Road leading from 5th main road towards Rajajainagar is only 15-feet wide; No provision to go from Margosa Road to Maha Kavi Kuvempu Road; Vehicles from Margosa road are forced to take a right turn at 7th main and again a left turn at 4th main road, to reach Kuvempu road, which is round-about; Traffic engineering experts insist on a road width of 120 ft for a grade separator, but Malleswaram circle has between 95 ft and 104 ft only.
