Bangalore: The BMP’s much-hyped Suvarna Bangalore programme has been aborted. The state government believes that we need to celebrate 50 years or the golden anniversary of Karnataka and not Bangalore.
Says chief secretary B K Das, “Bangalore is over 150 years old. Besides the celebrations are not for Bangalore but Karnataka. If we need to showcase Brand Bangalore, it will not just be a government exercise but we will highlight it in a true PPP manner.’’ When asked about the BMP’s claim that it would give a civic clean-up to the city, he said, “Taking care of roads and providing good amenities is a regular activity of the BMP, there is no need to separately call it another programme.’’
Sources in the government also said that Suvarna Bangalore was not a programme that the government had envisaged and Bangalore alone does not feature in the agenda. “It will turn out to be an exercise where corporators make money. Let us not forget that the BMP elections are supposed to be in November, the Suvarna Bangalore celebrations culminate then’’ they say.
Suvarna Bangalore is a programme envisaged by the BMP wherein commissioner Jairaj had said that roads, kerbstones, streetlights would be in good working condition.
